What is Business Interruption Coverage?

A catastrophe, such as a fire, may shut a business down temporarily. While the business is not operating, business income can stop or decrease substantially. Yet, expenses can continue and may even increase during this period. This is where Business Interruption coverage steps in. It is intended to cover the loss of net income, temporary relocation expenses, and ongoing expenses such as payroll, electricity, rent or mortgage.

Coverage Limitations
Insurance is designed to financially restore someone to where they would have been had the loss not occurred. Therefore, the business would be required to submit records that would provide a good indication as to what the business would have actually lost in net income. It is recommended that businesses keep a copy of at least 12 months of financial records offsite for this very reason.

Most policies include a waiting period, for example 72 hours, before coverage will begin. A maximum amount paid out each month as well as the amount paid out overall for the loss of net income is determined when the policy is purchased. The policy will also specify a maximum time the coverage will extend for. So for an example, a policy may state coverage will only apply for 120 days, include a limit of $120,000 with a monthly limitation of ¼. This would indicate the business owner would only be entitled to a maximum payment of $30,000 each month with a $120,000 maximum paid out over the course of 120 days.

Extra Expense
Extra Expense coverage is used to provide relief from additional expenses a business incurs to keep the doors open, such as relocating to a temporary location while the primary location is being repaired. This coverage is provided in addition to Business Income coverage.

Extended Period of Indemnity
Typically, Business Income coverage will stop when business operations are resumed. Yet, just because business resumes, doesn’t mean the normal flow of income immediately resumes as well. Extended Period of Indemnity can provide coverage in the interim, from the time the business is able to re-open its’ doors to when the income resumes to normal income levels. However, there will be a time limit imposed as to how long the coverage will apply as the insurance company can not guarantee income restoration.

How to purchase Business Interruption Insurance
Business Interruption coverage is not sold individually. It can be added to a commercial property insurance policy or a business owner’s policy.

Build More Profit Into Your Small Business

By Joan Nowak

As you prepare your business for success in the coming year, will you focus your time and resources on sales growth? While it's important, it's often not enough. For sustainable growth and profit with a lot more control, spread your efforts around - creating small improvements in ALL areas of your business. It's the formula for a business that is simple, fun and profitable!

So where do you start? Here's the formula I recommend.

Planning. You don't need a 50 page business plan. But you do need some clear, measurable goals with specific 'actions' you need to take to achieve them. Written goals and a simple action plan provide you with focus and clarity. So take the time to write down what you WANT (results or outcomes) and what you need to DO (actions) to make it happen.

Products/Services. When was the last time you actually thought about the products or services you offer? It's more than just 'what price should I charge'. Which ones are most profitable, which produce the most sales? Do your products and services still meet the needs of your target customers or do they need a facelift? Technology, competition and your customer needs change over time - make sure your products and services keep up!

Promotion. Sales don't just happen. So what are you doing to attract new customers and keep existing ones coming back and referring others? Most owners associate promotion with marketing for new customers - and invest few (if any) resources on current customers. Big mistake. Make sure your plans also include tactics to turn your current customers into raving fans - who spend more, buy more often and refer other quality people to your business.

Processes. Streamlining and standardizing procedures make daily operations easier, efficient and more effective, whether you are there or not. They are also a key to increased profitability. As you plan for the coming year, make systematizing your business more of a priority. Start with just a few. Focus on those that save you time, increase sales, or fix problems that consistently erode profit.

People. No business operates successfully in a vacuum - we all need help from others. While we often associate people with employees, building a strong network of contractors, vendors and alliance partners for your business is equally important. Your needs will vary based on your business - but most small businesses have an opportunity to improve in this area. Have a method for hiring or developing new relationships with people who are committed to your customers and the success of your business.

Personal Development. As you grow and improve, so will your business. We are all familiar with the phrase, knowledge is power, but it also translates to earnings or income. And it doesn't require a lot of time or money - just a commitment to learning and building skills and knowledge. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Invest 15 minutes a day reading and you will read about 12 books a year.
  • Turn drive time into learning with audio books.
  • Attend interactive workshops or webinars to improve knowledge gaps or simply get new ideas.
  • Meet with and build relationships with other successful business owners so you can share information and learn.
  • Work with a mentor or business coach who can help you find hidden opportunities, provide shortcuts to results and accountability to get more done.

Profit. You don't need to be an accountant or financial guru, but you do need to track and understand the numbers that drive your business - beyond just sales. Here's a few others to consider: average sale per customer or transaction, number of leads, revenue per employee, average accounts receivable, gross profit margins, customer retention rates and net profit. Monitor them and focus on activities that help to improve them - especially gross profit margins and net profit. If you keep them at the center of what you do, your small business will continue to serve your needs and the needs of your people and customers.

Remember, little improvements in ALL these areas will put more profit on the bottom line and in your wallet. So take the hybrid approach: bring together all the key elements that drive success - and you too will have a business that is simple, fun and profitable.

Do I Need Special Coverage for GPS, a DVD Player and Other Electronic Equipment in My Vehicle?

In some ways, auto insurance policies are like snowflakes. No, they aren’t cold or wet, and they sure don’t fall from the sky, but they are unique and tailored to each individual policyholder.

That makes it impossible to answer certain questions with a blithe yes or no response. Instead, we have no choice but to refer you to your policy or agent. One example of a question that can’t be answered with a simple yes or no is that of the need for special coverage for GPS, DVD players and other electronic equipment in your vehicle.

You see, cars and driving aren’t exactly like they used to be. There once was a time when watching television in a car would have involved the transport of a bulky, antennae-clad television with the world’s longest extension cord.

Modern technology has a short shelf life and a faster-than-ever evolution speed, and car insurance policies can’t always keep up. Generally speaking, your auto insurance policy probably offers some protection against the loss of personal property in your vehicle under certain circumstances.

Beyond that, drivers can generally expect that electronic items (no matter how new-fangled they are) actually installed in the automobile so that they are considered “part” of the vehicle are covered in the policy. Some removable items, such as CB antennas and portable DVD players, may not be or may only be if you have comprehensive coverage.

As always, no matter what is covered in your policy, you still need to consider both your deductible and limit as well. For instance, let’s say that you have a $500 stereo installed in your car and it is stolen, but your deducible per instance is $1,000. In this case, the loss of the stolen stereo falls under the heading of your deductible. Likewise, when the sum value of all the electronic items you add to upgrade your vehicle exceeds your policy limits, you will be financially responsible for their replacement.

Another type of protection you may want to consider is a Mechanical Breakdown Protection plan. Sometimes referred to as an extended warranty, this plan covers the cost to repair your vehicle when it breaks down. So if you just purchased a new vehicle, or if your warranty is about to expire, you need to speak with one of our agents. Just call us at (800) 807-6871 or complete our no obligation Quote form. It will only take a couple of minutes and it could save you thousands of dollars down the road.
