Health care has become a major headache for many small business owners--especially over the past few years when countless companies have experienced a significant drop in revenue as a result of the economic downturn and its slow recovery.
According to recent population statistics in the U.S., approximately one-third of workers without health insurance, or 13 million people, are working for companies with fewer than 100 employees. Moreover, of the small businesses that do provide some kind of coverage, much of the financial burden is being passed on to their workers.
According to the 2010 Employer Health Benefits Survey, conducted by the the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET), workers on average are paying almost $4,000 toward the cost of family health coverage, and among small firms (3-199 workers), 46 percent have deductibles of at least $1,000.
