Car rattlling mounds as Caltrans' repair Hwy 50


Annoying, car-rattling mounds are popping up daily on the freeway through Rancho Cordova, prompting unsettled drivers to wonder if the road has the mumps.

"Why are these needed?" driver Steve Sprague asked. "To slow us down? To work my vehicle's suspension to an early grave?"

Caltrans officials say the orderly rows of brownish bumps are their handiwork. It's a new technique to stabilize freeway slabs at the joints, giving them a longer life.
