Checkpoints air to deter drunken driving


As darkness fell on a recent Friday evening, Sacramento police officers and volunteers gathered in a shopping center parking lot on the southwest corner of Mack Road and Valley Hi Drive.

Two mobile incident command vehicles served as the hub for a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint on Aug. 20, one of 22 scheduled throughout the city of Sacramento between September 2009 and October of this year. Across the Sacramento region, similar scenes repeat themselves about 70 times a year.

Drivers on eastbound Mack Road were diverted into the right lane where several two-person teams – an officer and a representative of Mothers Against Drunk Driving – were stationed.
