Roseville may drop its crash tax

The city of Roseville was one of the region's early adopters of a "crash tax," and after two years it appears it will be the first to repeal it.  A vote to repeal the fee assessed nonresidents involved in traffic collisions is expected at the next City Council meeting later this month.

When the city approved the policy in February 2009, it expected to collect $100,000 annually from nonresident drivers. To date, the city has collected $40,000 through the fee, city officials said.

The call to repeal the fee came from city Councilman John Allard, who is in a crowded field vying for the 4th Assembly District seat that was left open by Ted Gaines' move to the state Senate.
