Texting while driving remains lethal despite lower teen auto fatalities

A recent study by the Center for Disease Control revealed that fatalities due to car accidents declined by 36% among teens between 16 and 17 years of age from 2004 through 2008. The CDC still cautions that crash fatalities remain the number one cause of death for this age group largely because of inexperience and distracted driving (texting, friends in the car, etc.)

Yesterday the American Automobile Association released a warning that texting while driving today is as dangerous as driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, reinforcing the need to be vigilant about distracted driving.

Officer Adrian Quintero of the California Highway Patrol, Valley Division in Sacramento, believes that the education and awareness programs being promoted by the CHP and other organizations like, Impact Teen Drivers of Sacramento, make a difference.
