Does anyone remember when we crusied K Street every Friday and Saturday night? I'm not sure those days will ever return, but it may be the beginning to improving the downtown area.

Crank up the Studebaker. Cars will be rolling again down Sacramento's K Street by November, officials say, like in the 1960s, when the street was the Valley's social and economic epicenter.

The cost this summer to get K Street ready for vehicles: $3 million.

Crews will start by putting a traffic signal in at 11th and K streets, near Ambrosia Cafe. Eleventh Street will remain a pedestrian walkway from K to L streets, and there will be no street connection from K Street north on 11th at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, either. The city wants the signal there, though, because there are a lot of pedestrians.

Protecting pedestrians is a main theme here.

Crews will put planter boxes and benches alongside the new traffic lanes to keep drivers from veering onto the sidewalks. (The street won't have curbs.)
