If someone borrows my car, what is covered and who covers it?

Most people, when they compare auto insurance quotes, give little thought to how their auto coverage protects them when someone else drives their car. While it’s natural – and logical – to assume that drivers, not cars, cause accidents, the insurance world usually disagrees.

Consider situations when others may drive your car

Insurance rates combine the value and loss history of vehicles like yours and your personal driving/accident record. Insurance quotes usually do not account for other drivers not named on your policy. You probably don’t give it a thought when you compare insurance rates, either. Yet, there are at least two situations where this question arises.

  • Someone borrows your car with your permission.
  • Someone borrows your auto without your permission—usually called “stealing.”

Another situation, while rare, sometimes occurs that generates even more confusion.

  • Your Aunt Florence comes to live with you for a short while (hopefully). She borrows your next door neighbor’s car and has an accident.

Most people have no idea what or who is covered as it’s not usually mentioned in auto insurance quotes. These situations create confusion, fear, and uncertainty for both drivers and insured car owners.
