I feel like I am paying way, way too much for my car insurance. Claims for “lowest rates” seem to be everywhere. How do I find out for sure?

Preparation is key when comparing car insurance. In order to find the best auto insurance for your specific needs, you must be prepared when shopping for insurance.

Know the laws of your state

Find out how much insurance is mandated in your state. Locate your state’s department of insurance to find out the legal requirements for insurance.

Determine what type of coverage you need

Determine which type of insurance you would like to purchase. Depending on your state requirements, your banks requirements (if the car is financed), and your personal preferences, determine which types of auto insurance coverage you are going to buy.

Obtain a copy of your driving record

Get a copy of your driving record from the DMV. When applying for an auto insurance policy, you need to know exactly how many accidents and moving violations are on your record. Get the information ahead of time in case there are any errors on your record that you would like to dispute before applying for insurance.

Shop around

Contact four or five insurance companies that provide auto insurance quotes. The quotes should be free. Do not deal with a company that charges you for quotes. Ask for quotes for several different deductibles and limits.

In order to determine which type of insurance is best for you, get several different quotes and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each. Read the fine print to determine if there are any restrictions that may require additional premiums or fees.

Ask about discounts

Many companies offer "good driver" discounts if you have gone a number of years without a ticket. They may also provide additional discounts if you drive less than a specified number of miles per year, store your car in secure garage, or your care features airbags, anti-lock brakes or an alarm.
